A Decade in Pictures: The Story Behind the BCC IT Wall Mural

The 2026 Mural Update

Anyone who has visited the BCC IT office in Newcastle Emlyn in Carmarthenshire, will be familiar with the striking, colourful mural that greets you the moment you step through the front door. And if you’ve been inside our main meeting room, you’d be hard pressed to have missed it.

It’s more than a painting. More than artwork. It’s a story. A story that has evolved over a decade.

To mark the beginning of a new year, local Welsh artist Rhiannon Roberts returned to BCC IT ten years after first creating the mural, to refresh and update the piece, bringing it beautifully up to date for 2026.

An Impressionist Map of Wales, Locality, and Home of BCC IT

The impressive mural is an impressionist view of our office, in relation to the rest of Wales. Roads weave across the image, landscapes shift in colour and mood, and familiar landmarks and symbols appear – in fact the longer you look, the more you seem to notice, every time.

At its centre sits our office – connected to the communities, places, journeys and people that help shape our daily life. It reflects Wales as we experience it – full of movement, character and stories.  This isn’t a literal map. It’s a living one.

Captured in Paint

Rhiannon spent three days at BCC IT during the refresh, carefully updating the mural to reflect a decade of change – not just visually, but culturally.

A decade where technology has evolved, the business has grown, and new relationships and partnerships have formed. A decade where people and stories have become part of our daily lives. All this lives in colourful detail, greeting everyone who passes through our doors day in and day out, as the mural continues to reveal new moments, references, and insights the more time you spend with it.

The BCC IT Vans

If you’ve ever seen our team out and about across Wales, these may feel instantly familiar. The BCC IT vans are woven into the wider Welsh landscape – a nod to their everyday journeys that support the work we do behind the scenes.

Familiar Faces, Hidden Stories

With new details, refined scenes, and carefully placed references, the new mural brings us fully into the present day – without losing any of the spirit of the original.

When you look closely, you may spot references to local talent and organisations we’ve already introduced in our Insights and Sponsorship Spotlight series. As well as a few future spotlights still to come.

It’s visual Easter-egg hunt. Some details are obvious, while others sit quietly in the background. But they’re all part of the wider story of who we are, who we work with, and why.

More than Decoration

This mural does so much more than decorate our space – it reflects how we see our place within it. Rooted locally. Connected nationally. And always evolving. So next time you visit the BCC IT office, take a moment. Look again. We like to think, that much like Wales itself, it rewards the curious wanderer.

Our thanks and gratitude to Rhiannon for capturing our story through her distinctive signature style.
